Anyone here a current or former Drum Major? I had the honor of being one of four Drum Majors for the Lassiter High School Band (www.lbba.org) in Marietta, GA back in '93.
Just wondering who among us has stood on a podium and flapped their arms around.

Re: Drum Majors
Mon, March 1, 2004 - 1:17 PMI wasn't a major but...I marched for Norcross High School in '93 and you were our biggest competition. We had a AAA band with one major and managed to sweep all our comps. I think we might have even beat Lassiter that year. That was the year Norcross' Drum Major was killed by a drunk driver on his way to Athens. -

Mon, March 1, 2004 - 7:28 PMMy little sis is the drum major of our high school's band right now! I was too busy goofing off the whole time when I was in band to be the drum major! -

Re: Drum Majors
Tue, March 9, 2004 - 4:44 PMYuppers. I was our high school's drum major for 3 years (1989-1991). If I had it to do over again, I would so have been low brass instead. Our band director had this "student leader" thing, so I wasn't allowed to make out in the stands and the back of the bus like all the other band pervs, um, I mean geeks.
Even the knee high white somewhat fetishy boots could not make up for having to freeze my patookas off during calvacade awards ceremonies when everyone else had changed into their cozy clothes. Seriously, what was I thinking? I mean, yeah, I needed to get out of the piccolo squad, but I could play a couple of brass instruments by that point. Oh, to have it to do over again. The making out I could have done. Alas.
I wasn't even allowed to have a baton thingie because of an unfortunate accident several years prior involving a female drum major who thought it would be a good idea to try to jump over her baton where it had embedded itself in the ground after a failed catch. Apparently the first aid was sufficiently embarrassing for our band director that by the time I came along, drum majors were no longer allowed batons. Heh.

I really *don't* want to know just what got injured. Yikes.
I was a drum major for about 3 years with the SF Lesbian/Gay Freedom Band. Yep, at the grand old ages of 37-40, excluding the year I had to have back surgery. Every try to conduct from a wheelchair? Not much fun. Not much fun at *all*. -

Re: Drum Majors
Wed, November 17, 2004 - 1:21 PMYes, I've been a Drum Major.
Always wanted to be one in high school, tried out and all, but was told although I did best of 5 auditioning, it was time for a boy to be drum major, so...He was 6'4". pretty good at it, and ended up at Texas A&M in the Aggie Corps.
Later in life (okay, in my 30's) I was drum major for the San Francisco L/G Freedom Band for a number of years. I learned how-to on the streets of San Francisco. It was a wild ride. Actually, I loved it, except for the over-hyper parade monitors at Chinese NY (run!run!) It was such an honor, having 40 or so peers trust me with their safety enough to lead them. Had lots of adventures: horses throwing riders in front of me, police chasing someone into the band, firecrackers, Muni grates, rain, wind, hot tar sticking to the band's shoes, getting kisses and phone numbers from crowdmembers, posing for pics with tourists. I really miss it sometimes, although it was time to step aside and let someone else drive the bus.

Re: Drum Majors
Wed, March 10, 2004 - 10:18 PMI made Drum Major my Junior Year, but I didn't got to actually enjoy it. My parents got divorced and the ugly custody battle ended with me having to change schools... *Sigh* Oh well... Someday I will make it to a university with a good band program. -

Re: Drum Majors
Fri, November 12, 2004 - 3:43 PMwhat sort of drum majoring do you want to do nathalie?
if its the actually being in charge kind...I suggest going to Cal, or Washington, or Oregon.
though its not for everyone, and they each select and give the DM differing responsibilities.
if you want to be the figure head kind of thing, go to UCLA, USC, or a big time Midwest school.

Funniest Drum Major Story (this is true)
Wed, November 17, 2004 - 1:33 PMI was Drum Major for a pulled together band for one of the 1st Dyke Marches here in San Francisco. For those out of the area, it's more a women's rally/protest than a parade. Anyhow, I got tired of waiting for something to start (disorganized, too many political speeches), so I gave the command to forward march. The crowd parted, and we took off. The crowd fell in line behind us. So far, so good...people coming out of shops and restaurants, waving, a large, noisy, semi-clothed mob behind us. Pretty soon, 2 of SF's finest (ala cops) ride up on motorcycles and tell me they're our escourt. Great! No having to stop traffic by myself. They race ahead, stopping cars.
Thirty minutes into this, it's getting dark, and we're now marching down Mission Street ( a VERY congested thoroughfare on Saturday night). I yelled up to the cops "So, where are we going?" Response back, "I don't know, we thought you knew!" I kid you not. Turns out they were following my lead, and I was following their's. I had managed to hijack 1/2 of Dyke March. We turned the group around and basically ran back toward the Castro, where the 2 parts of the rally met up. It was a crazy, only in San Francisco night.
we don't often march in that rally anymore......

Re: Drum Majors
Sun, November 28, 2004 - 2:24 PMYo! Yo tambien - I was the DM [mace] my senior year at Bloomington HS [Calif.]. Our band was too small to need multiple arm-flappers for field shows, so I 'lead' the field maneuvers while the director made it look like we were doing something deliberate.

Mon, July 25, 2005 - 11:42 AMI was Drum Major in High School ('87 - Capital High, Boise Idaho) and then at the University of Hawaii. I also taught Drum Major camps for USA (United Spirit Association).

Re: Drum Majors
Mon, April 24, 2006 - 10:05 PMI'm a lifetime band nerd in addition to other hobbies like bellydancing and genealogy. I was drum major for 2 years in high school (Barbe high school, Lake Charles, LA) attended several different drum major camps and even got the privilage of being a couselor/junior instructor 4 times at similar camps. I was chosen last year to be one of three drum majors at McNeese State University (the college I attend in Lake Charles), but our season pretty much didn't exist because of Hurricane Rita. So, now I'm trying out again for this coming marching season. Tryouts are Thursday and I'm still really nervous. Wish me luck!

Re: Drum Majors
Thu, April 27, 2006 - 1:15 PMI'm the drum major for my high school marching band right now... in fact i'm in the process of making up my new routine for the big town parade thing... last one of my senior year. I've been devoted to band since i was in sixth grade... I almost never became drum major. I tried out all four years of high school and never got it and i was pushed back to assistant. my best friend did. She ruined the position's title and our friendship by being a jerk to everyone, a lousy leader, and just an all around bad role model if you catch my drift. The friday night before the first band review of my senior year was a football game, the drum major was caught drunk in the bathroom at a break. Our band director is a pretty intense guy, and I got a little frightened when he called me down from the stands just being like "LINDSAY! I need to talk to you RIGHT NOW!" I thought i had gotten in trouble and was horrified at the thought of what he could be so pissed about... he took me out of sight of the band and said, " starting tomorrow morning, You are the drum major." I nodded to show i understood but i didn't quite grasp why he said the next morning... i kind of thought he was doing it for dramatic effect... but no... he just kind of looked at me funny and repeated... "tomorrow MORNING..." My head snapped back from looking off absentmindedly wonderment at my sudden promotion and it clicked.. all i could say was, "you mean... tomorrow as in 6 am tomorrow? as in band review? as in... YOU MEAN I HAVE TO COMPETE TOMORROW?!?!?" he just nodded and sent me to go sit in the stands... i stayed up until about 1 am practicing and making up a comp routine that i didn't have... good times? sure... it was all worth it in the end. I've been able to get this band more unified than i've seen it since our old drum major left... now all i have to do is find the next one... I'm trying but it's a hard position to fill. Well that was nice... thanks for asking!
