I was just wondering what High School everybody went to. I went to Clovis West High School. I also taught many top notch H.S. bands for about 10 years till I retired from the activity and went into computers.

Re: What HS Band were you in?
Tue, December 16, 2003 - 9:24 PMOkay, so what was your school's mascot? Mine was the miller. Our marching band unis. were AWFUL! Navy blue polyester with an orange stripe running down the leg, and the jackets had a white patent leather patch over the front with a dirty W in orange and navy blue. The school has had them since at least 1972, I kid you not. No funding for inner-city schools hehe. My god they were fugly. -
-
Re: What HS Band were you in?
Tue, December 16, 2003 - 10:48 PMOkay our mascot was the cavalier - in honor of Robert Cavalier Sieur de La Salle, the first French explorer to visit my area of northern Illinois. So our marhcing uniforms were supposed to be like the outfit a French explorer would have worn - puffy feather on hat and apparently red and green polyester that didnt breathe. -

Wed, December 17, 2003 - 7:06 AMLawrenceville High School Indians on the Warpath! It was horrible we this guy who would dress up like an Indian and go on the Warpath...it was so politically incorrect! All of my friends were in band. We actively embraced our nerd status and when poeple would make fun of band kids we'd just play up our nerdiness to absurd levels! The high school band definitely gave me my fondest memories of high school! -

Re: What HS Band were you in?
Fri, May 14, 2004 - 4:34 PMShorecrest, Home of the Highlanders -- where I first learned to play Highland pipes. As far as I'm concerned, those of us in the pipe/drum corps were the mascot, but for the sake of jonesing w/ other schools at football games the school had to drum up this stuffed-head pseudo-Scottish guy dubbed "Otis" who was as much of a politically incorrect epithet as "the Red Skins" type thing IMO.
Oh well, we had fun. Our school really wasn't a sports school -- we were clearly more recognized as a music school -- that's where we won when it came to competiting. At Shorecrest, it's not that band-geeks/nerds/jocks were so bad, we were just the norm. Our marching band was cool -- all of us in proper kilts repleat with military style jackets, hats, etc. With kilts from $500-650 each, dang man, the money going down the street when our 200+ strong marching band was on parade. Oddly, I have warm memories of high school whenever I smell rained-on wool -- and that ended spring of '92. -

Re: What HS Band were you in?
Fri, July 30, 2004 - 4:17 PMY'all can call me "Pappy" - Bloomington [CA] High School Marching Bruins, Class o' '79. Our band was so small, we had no low brass some years. Just me & a buddy doing yeoman's duty on twin baritone saxes during those lapses. (Later on I would become drum major.) Yes, it was all tremendously sad - especially when we saw REAL bands at work....
(Oh, and our uniforms were 100% mothball-stenched wool - in southern Cal! - and must've been 20 years old when we upgraded to new uniforms [yes, more wool] in 1977. The one feature I miss most from those old battle garments: snap-in cummerbunds for our "convertible" jackets [w/ the snappy shawl collars that wouldn't be fashionable for decades, if ever...] when switched to concert mode. And I miss wearing spats, a 1-year experiment that I had instigated.) -

Re: What HS Band were you in?
Sat, July 31, 2004 - 2:58 PMWow, sounds like you're talking about my band. We had a huge colorguard (bigger than the band of 20-ish players, normally) - over the course of five years we dropped from 115 members to 55 - and 30 of that was guard. Granted, we had the #1 guard in the state, giving us the only caption awards at competitions. Wool uniforms in dark maroon, blech. They're even smaller now. :(
I'd always just sit there, watching the real bands...wishing I could have been playing with a group of more devoted, hard-working members like them. Oh well. Always senior corps to march...

Fri, August 13, 2004 - 9:11 PMfor high school Central Catholic High School Marching Band, though we didn't march and there were only like 15 of us. mostly we played at football games and threw shit at the other teams.

Re: What HS Band were you in?
Sun, August 15, 2004 - 4:35 PMMine was Ithaca High School in upstate New York. Class of 1980. (Okay, pappy has me beat by a year.)
I've got some great competition stories. Did you all do marching band competitions? Actually, we entered both marching band and wind ensemble competitions.
Our mascot was a skunk. I kid you not. Apparently, back in the 40s or 50s, one of the cheerleaders had a descented pet skunk who became the cheer team's mascot, and the character stuck. The cheer team used to shout "Skunk 'em," but of course, it was more common for our opponents to yell, "You stink!" And unfortunately, that cheer was pretty much the more accurate of the two.
Not that us band geeks cared all that much, except it meant things were thrown at us from the stands.
Ah high school. Makes one nostalgic, huh? ;) -

Re: What HS Band were you in?
Mon, August 30, 2004 - 3:36 PMI went to Mac Arthur HS in Irving TX class of 76. Yes you may call me gradma. We were All State Marching and Concert Champions for the last 3 years I was there. We performed at nation-wide concert competitions in Atlanta and Chicago and took home the trophy both times. It was a huge music program that was excellent (this was before the days of reaganomics and budget cuts). And yes we had the god awful wool uniforms and tall furry hats.
Competition stories...ever loose your shoe on a muddy side line while executing a snap turn in marching band contest? -

Re: What HS Band were you in?
Tue, August 31, 2004 - 10:42 AMI almost lost shoes sticking to the pavement doing the RoseBowl parade.
For the 24'ish hrs before the parade, people camp-out on the route and claim space for watching the parade. Aparently, for some reason, these folks used to throw rocks at the cars and people on the other side of the street -- obvious problem -- so some politicial suggested that they throw something harmless instead 'like marshmallows'. So now people go to Costco, get the 50-ton bag of marshmallows and go camp-out on the parade route, and throw marshmallows for 24hrs or so before the parade.... which consequently end up all over the vehicles... and the pavement... which the vehicles grind into the cement... which heats up during the parade, and makes 6 miles of a sticky horse-pooped-on mess for those in the parade from around the world to march on the following day.
And I come away from that parade saying what.... "Man, I would not go back and change a thing for the world."
(and that's only 1 part of the pains of that parade LOL) -

Re: What HS Band were you in?
Thu, September 2, 2004 - 3:08 PMI myself never lost a shoe, but I have a fuzzy memory of someone [a drummer, I believe] losing a shoe to a road apple - either because of the viscosity or because the victim kicked it off in horror/disgust.

Re: What HS Band were you in?
Sat, November 20, 2004 - 6:16 PMNorth Garland Raiders, Garland Texas, Class of '76. Our mascot was Yosemite Sam (yeah, the cartoon) and it was fitting, as the team sucked. However, the band rocked. 96-120 members. Class AAAA, for those that count. We were a 100% band school (no orchestra). We also had Music Theory classes and Music Theatre and Choir.
I liked our uniforms: Red and black: black tux covered with shiny red overlays (plastic-type) with spangles. We looked like those sparkly bowling balls. Short shakos, white spats, and white gloves, ala Bill Moffit. We did lots of dancing and precision routines.
I liked our unifomrs- truly I was a band geek. -

Re: What HS Band were you in?
Sun, July 31, 2005 - 12:17 PMGlad to know there are other band geeks lurking in the mist...
went to San Lorenzo Valley High School band, in the Santa Cruz Mountains.
started out on cornet in 2nd grade, moved to flute in 5th grade 'cuz I was tired of hauling the big case up the hill. 7th grade played alto sax in jazz band (ruined my taste for Norwegian Wood), switched to oboe after my honor band tape got lost my freshman year. moving to oboe had me pick up the drums for marching band, got to play the quadratoms my senior year, that was way fun. made it to allstate honor band with my oboe my junior year, still can't bring myself to listen to the record of it.
after HS, played oboe in college orchestra, but my insecurity got the best of me. I had little patience for making reeds.
last year took up singing lessons, which has been a lot of fun. still intending to learn blues harmonica. and hopefully soon, after I buy a home, I'll move a piano in and learn to play that instrument.
and yup, went to band camp a few times. -
