We have a terrific concert this weekend, conducted by one of the top Band guys in California - Tim Smith, Director of Bands at Cal State East Bay for 22 years.

Details below. Hope you can make it!

The San Francisco Lesbian/Gay Freedom Band presents

An Enduring View

Guest Conductor Professor Timothy M. Smith, California State University, East Bay

8 pm, Saturday, March 17
Ebenezer Lutheran Church, 678 Portola Dr. (near Twin Peaks), SF
Information: http://www.sflgfb.org; 415-255-1355
Admission Free

The San Francisco Lesbian/Gay Freedom Band performs a plea for peace, Et in Terra Pax, as the finale of An Enduring View, the first concert of its 2007 Community Concert Series. An Enduring View presents a range of powerful pieces that explore our mortality and what it means to endure.
Guest Conductor Timothy M. Smith has served as Professor of Music and Director of Bands at California State University, East Bay for 22 years, and was recently named California Music Educators Association Bay Section’s Outstanding Music Educator of 2006.
Reception and photography exhibition hosted by A Woman’s Eye Gallery and Ebenezer Lutheran Church follows the concert.

Program includes:
· Endurance by Timothy Mahr tells the tale of polar explorer Ernest Shackleton and his crew, who were stranded on the ice of Antarctica from 1914 to 1916 and survived.

· Urban Scenes by Andrew Boysen, Jr., is a 5-part tone poem, reflecting the daily rush and hassle we endure.

· Et in Terra Pax was written by Belgian composer Jan van der Roost in 1998 for the town concert band in Vlamertinge, a Belgian town along the WWI battlefront that was frequently bombed and the site of a military cemetery from that war. This striking work includes the reading of “Sonnet” – a poem articulating the senseless loss of war written by young English poet Charles Hamilton Sorley not long before he himself was killed on a WWI battlefield.

· Stars by Jay Dawson captures our wonder at the vastness and brilliance of the universe.

· Caccia and Chorale, the last composition by Clifton Williams, explores the frantic “chase” that drives our modern lives, followed by the stately chorale, which calls us to stop and examine our lives.

· A View of the World by Brian Balmages celebrates the life and youthful spirit of a young band student, frozen in time when his life ends early.

Hey folks. You may have noticed that we had three cymbal players for the majority of the weekend. Well, over the weekend we had a cymbal spot open up, when a member decided that drum corps just wasn't for her.

The timing of this is obviously not great for the corps, but I would like to try to fill her spot immediately. If anyone knows someone who would like to jump in now (i.e. this weekend), please let me know. I don't think it is realistic for anyone to be "in" for the North Carolina field show (maybe LMS though), but we want them in the mix as soon as humanly possible.

If not, we go three cyms, no big deal.

Thanks,

Please email:

As said in this tribe before, I'm working on recording an album. I have one tune set I'm looking to do with vocals -- a patrotic4Scotland tune called The Flower Of Scotland, which was written by one of the members of the 2-man Scottish 60's folk group, The Corries. Good stuff.

Anyhoo, so I'm looking to record this tune and have (essentially) a chior also be recorded on the track. When I mentioned this to idea (in more detail that I have gone into here) to my instructor, he said, "Hey, cool idea. Who are you going to get to do your vocal arrangements?"

Uh, vocal arrangements?

I'm not sure why I'd need that -- would it be because Highland bagpipes are in this funky penatonic B-flat key? (which is what I want the vocal group to sing in) Would it be for legal reasons having to do with copyright use/stuff? I'm confused about this (obviously) -- why do/would I need this? What purpose would it serve? It seems to me that if I want a group to sing in this funky key, as long as I provided them with a recording, if they're worth their salt, they ought to be able to pull it off -- yes/no?

Hmm, here's something a bit different I think in the way of topics for this tribe... but it occurred to me that this could/should very well be a good place to field this for discussion.

I need some chatter on the topic of busking -- or for those unfamiliar -- street musician. More particularly, on the sub-topic of using a bottler -- the optional person who passes the hat while the performance is going on, drums up audience members, sells CDs, provides info about the perfomer/s, etc.

I busk annually at Seattle music festivals on both Memorial and Labour Day weekends, and I've thought of using a bottler this time around at the event that is this month, but I've only ever seen a bottler used 2ce -- ever -- once in the US and once in Edinburgh -- and I don't know the standard busking practice on using a bottler.... I'm hoping to get some further help here. I've also posted this line of questioning on StreetMusician tribe, UK tribe, and the Bob Dunsire Forum (non-tribe forum).

SO, w/o further adue, if anyone here knows about busking/bottling, please let me know what you know...

Mainly, I'm curious to know...
* What cut does the bottler get? The only person I've heard from so far thought it was 30% -- which seems fine so long as you have only 1-2 performers -- any more, and the performers seem to be getting hozed on their earnings... at the point of 3 or more performers does it then become that the bottler get's an equal share to the performers?

I'm also curious to know...
* When I was 1st told about using a bottler, it was by a locally well-known-for-being-an old drunk Irish Trad session player -- and I think he's better known for the drunk part. He carried on about how it _has_ to be an attractive, teasingly dressed female. I understand the reasoning behind this (helps bring males to your performance & money in your case in their hopes that they'll get romantic attention from the bottler), but it seems that the gender of a bottler wouldn't matter, instead how (professional?) they conduct themself. Experiences to this effect?
* Is there any opinion on having a same or opposite gendered bottler to the performer or average of the group?
* If you've busked and used a bottler, would you use one again?
* What was the bottler's relation to the performer/s? (girl/boyfriend, spouce, someone the performer/s just met, etc)
* What settings do bottlers work well/poorly in?

Anyway, I've got questions about this -- cut of the hat being the most pressing. I would prefer answers that are knowlegable of the (seemingly) international protocoll of all-things-busking as opposed to feeling/opinion based responses, short those from people who have busked and used a bottler but are generally otherwise unfamiliar w/ this protocoll. I don't mean to be rude of couse, I just wish to stick with the busking norms which include curtosy(sp?) toward those involved with busking.

Hope to hear some stuff on this.

So I was a fool who marched bass clarinet (hard on the neck) and the bigger fool who played Bb contrabass clarinet in concert band and felt the mighty fury of the subsonic Eb that is probably responsible for the same manner of brain damage that most oboe players receive while playing.

The idea is to take sounds from the classic pop era (Phil Spector,Stax/Volt, Burt Bacharach, 60's Motown) and combine it with modern, forward thinking artists (Garbage, Beck, Portishead, Bjork) with just enough anger to keep it from sounding bland. We will use samples, loops, effects, unusual voicings and instruments. Unfortunately, I can't seem to find winds, brass, strings or keys in Chicago. All I've been getting are guitar players! I'd MUCH rather see a DCI/Hollywood produced field show than any of the crap currently on the CBS (Crappy Broadasting Service) halftime show. Not that any Jackson scandal, P.
